I was shocked when I heard the number, 1 out of every 7 people driving don’t have automobile insurance. I’ve had lots of people looking for insurance that don’t have it. I’ll ask them how they got to my office and the most common answer is “they drove.” With that many uninsured people driving, you need to check your auto policy to see if you’re properly covered.
There are two coverages you need. The first one is obvious; it’s called “uninsured motorist coverage.” This protects you if you’re hit by a driver without insurance. This coverage will pay for your medical bills sustained in the accident and depending on your policy, the damage to your car as well (up to the amount you are insured for).
The second coverage is called “underinsured motorist.” Many people are driving with state required minimum insurance. In Wisconsin, the state minimum of insurance is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in Wisconsin. Any accident with bodily injury will mostly likely use up that minimum coverage and a whole lot more. This is where “underinsured motorist coverage” comes in. When an underinsured person hits you, they will quickly go through their liability limits. When their insurance policy is maxed out, then your policy will kick-in to pay for the rest of your injuries and car damage (up to the amount you are insured for).
Green Bay Insurance Center doesn’t write state minimum liability because the coverage is so limited that there is a good chance you’ll pay out of pocket if you get in an accident. Why pay for insurance when it won’t cover you in a basic accident? This isn’t a sales pitch either. The difference between having state minimum insurance and GB Insurance Center’s minimum limit ($100,000 per person $300,000 per accident) is about the price of a meal for two at a restaurant.
